'OUTDATED'
Project type
Zine
Date
2023
FORMAT
Outdated displays windows of acetate containing contents of a 1960s inspired living room, using real items from my childhood home. As the zine progresses, items are removed until we are left with an empty room, reflecting how interiors wouldn't exist without the impact of design classics. The second section of the zine is inspired by Ikea catalogs as a brand who have carried accessible interiors for years and narrowed down on how design is a loop, everything will be back.
BRIEF
Create a zine in collaboration with clothing brand TSPTR based around the word ‘homegrown’.
PROJECT APPROACH
My interpretation of home grown was taking an aspect of my childhood home that has remained throughout time, such as my parent’s shelves. Even though we’ve grown around it, they have withstood time. I grew up in a 1960s butterfly roof bungalow. My Father has always been an inspiration to me, his creative mind has always been reflected in the homes we have lived in, it’s not an architects house without pictures of chairs everywhere! The shelves have been in every house we've lived in and it made me think about how people don't often keep their furniture anymore, people don't love things like they used to.
PROJECT RESULT
Outdated aimed to create a space appreciating 'outdated' trends, and recognising them as a foundation for modern design. The zine features acetate layers of a room that represent a 1960s home gradually being removed until we are left with an empty space. Highlighting how design classics have massively shaped modern interiors and their longevity is so important culturally. Without them we are left with nothing. The back of the zine is inspired by vintage IKEA catalogs, further implementing the narrative.
PROJECT LEARNING
The creation of Outdated really made me delve into my personal progression since childhood. Reigniting my passion for interiors in a way that felt very personal to me and my family. The zine pushed my technical skills in creation, but overall I feel outdated represents themes that are significant to me and the interiors landscape. Outdated has since won multiple internal awards.
Inspired by my childhood home. People don't love their things like they used to. Wanting everything to be new and perfect is great, but what would things look like if we never had those 'ugly' 1960s patterned carpets?
